What am I looking at?

So many people ask me about the meaning behind my work. As a fine artist, my work rarely comes without a concept or vision. I hope to get you all up to speed with the concepts behind each of my works. Each piece has its own story to tell.

I look forward to your requests about which works you would like me to explain further, and if you had any ideas that you would like to share with me for inspiration, I welcome them all too.

Artwork Explained: Like a Jigsaw

Like a Jigsaw

This intaglio print was created in connection with the Christchurch earthquake back in 2014. During this time, a lot of the city’s most prominent buildings were being demolished. I spent an afternoon biking around the city, taking photos of both the rubble and the structures that survived. As I looked at the scaffolding, it reminded me of a Lego set, fitting together to create the building blocks for something bigger and better to come.

Artwork Explained: Cities Expanding

Cities Expanding

This print is about the changing landscape of New Zealand to make way for the urban development of our major cities. This work is based on Christchurch's growth with its ever-increasing population. The map on the top of the work is of the Christchurch metro bus system and the major roads it uses to get around the city. But like a tree and its branches, the city's major routes are getting larger and longer, trying to keep up with the demand for new developments around the edge of the city.

Overall the work is about the balance of the natural environment and urban development. The concept we can't live with one or the other. Instead, man and nature working together, enabling them to both grow and thrive.
